CALLING ALL FRIENDS AND FAMILY!!
Phil is doing well at the Care Meridian facility in Artesia, where he has been living since the beginning of November. His speech and physical therapists are working with him a couple of times a week in an effort to help develop his ability to communicate. He remains in a state of semi-consciousness with periods of alertness.
What Phil needs more than anything, at this point, are visitors! While the facility provides a comfortable environment for Phil, he has had far fewer visitors since his relocation. As a result, he is receiving less of the regular sensory stimulation required to continue progressing and rehabilitating. Phil needs visitors to keep him engaged and to remind him how greatly he is missed and how much hope we still have for his recovery. Encouraged stimulating activities include reading, telling stories, listening to music, watching TV/movies, playing a musical instrument, talking, etc.
Thanks to everyone for staying connected and positive. Please make an effort to visit with Phil as soon as possible – a gift of your time is priceless.

Care Meridian

Artesia, CA 90701

We're happy to report that Phil is settled at the new facility and is progressing nicely. Care Meridian provides a much more homelike environment and Phil is in a large, comfortable room with only one other patient. Phil has started to eat solid food and has begun very preliminary physical and speech therapy.

We've been told by his care providers that we can resume visits with Phil immediately! The hours have changed a bit to accommodate the visiting hours at Care Meridian (beginning at 11am) -- including more evening visits for those of you who were having trouble getting out to see Phil during the day.

Thanks to everyone for staying engaged and positive. Hope you get a chance to visit with Phil soon!

The Hanleys have good news to report -- on Friday, 10/24, Phil will be moved from Kindred Hospital to a facility in Artesia specializing in therapy for patients having suffered traumatic brain injury. Given Phil's increased movement, responsiveness, and reactions, the move is appropriate and will address his changing needs.
For now, we will suspend hospital visits until we know the schedule/policies at the new facility. Look for another update in the next week or two. Thanks to everyone for your visits and energy and continued positive thinking!

GREAT NEWS!!

The Hanley family is thrilled to share some amazing news: today, Phil uttered his first words/sounds since the accident. Although it is too soon to tell exactly what it means in terms of his recovery, it is an incredible and encouraging sign! Please let's make sure we fill up his visitation schedule -- he needs stimulation now more than ever.

Thank you to everyone for your good thoughts and energy -- please keep them coming and we will provide another update as soon as we know more!

At the nine week mark, Phil is continues to make steady progress. He is still unconcioius yet is increasing his movement in both hands. He grips and squeezes his right hand with greater strength each day. He is also moving his head and left hand. Many of these movements appear to be on command. This is a great sign!

Keep up the wonderful support and thoughts. We knew this would be a long haul but Phil fighting hard!

We have very postive news to report. As of Friday, September 5, Phil is breathing through a trach without the assistance of a ventilator. He also no longer requires dialysis. His body remains free of any secondary concerns such as infection. Very encouraging signs!
A sincere thanks to the community for continuing support of the Hanley family, particularly to those who have begun to pay visits to Phil at the hospital to read, listen to music and other forms of very welcome sensory stimulation. Every ounce of support is invaluable. We will continue to provide updates to the community as new information becomes available.

Hello Phil Supporters! MEETING AUGUST 27th from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

As many of you know, Phil is at a sub acute care facility in West Covina. He remains on a ventilator and receives dialysis treatment daily. Since he is still in a coma, it is time for a concerted effort to provide the appropriate sensory stimulation to speed up his recovery.

The support from the community has been tremendous. Many of you have expressed interest in helping in a more direct way. We are looking for people who feel they have the time and the level of comfort necessary to visit Phil periodically, for up to 30 minutes per visit, to provide sensory stimulation such as: reading, telling stories, recounting memories, watching television, listening to music and other activities.

On Wednesday, August 27th, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm, we will be training interested and available individuals on the protocols and particulars of providing this type of support. The training will be held at the Aveson Charter School campus, located at 1919 E. Pinecrest Drive in Altadena.

If you are interested in attending the meeting, please RSVP to meredithking@aveson.org

Thank you for your continued support.

THANK YOU TO ALL FAMILIES THAT SUPPORTED BEAUTIFYING THE CAMPUS ON SATURDAY AUGUST 23rd!!

Many of you may still be wondering what you can do to help the Hanley family.
Here are a couple of ways you can help!

Next, Saturday August 30th from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, we are having the second of two consecutive Saturday work days. In Phil's absence, are beautiful campus leaves something to be desired before the school year starts. We are asking that you come to Aveson tomorrow with your work gloves, painters cap, and your gardening tools, and help out wherever you can.

Also, we have ordered and received 350 blue silicone bracelets that say "Phil, We Believe in You". (Big thank you to the Cohn family :0)) We have adult and child sizes and we are ready to sell the bracelets to you. Bracelets are $5 each or 5 for $20. If we sell them all, we will raise $1100 for the Hanley family. This is a wonderful way to show our support. Wearing our bracelets will be a symbol of our strong community and remind us to keep this family close to our hearts through Phil's recovery.

Bracelets are on sale NOW in the main office, and will be available on both Saturday workdays. We encourage every family to stop by as soon as possible!

Thank you for your support!

"Since the time of our last blog update, Phil's team of doctors at Huntington Memorial determined that Phil was physically stable. On Friday, August 15, Phil was transferred to a sub-acute care facility in West Covina. he remains in a deep coma and is receiving daily dialysis to support kidney function on a ventilator for breathing.
Please continue your positive thoughts that Phil comes out of the coma and regains consciousness. The Hanley family thanks you for your continuing care, generosity and support.

Going forward, the blog will only be updated if there is a significant change in Phil's condition. Thank you for your understanding." We all miss Phil VERY MUCH!

Thank you all so much for your donations it is helping the family with housecleaning, gas, and groceries.

Phil's intracranial pressure (ICP) has remained within normal ranges over the past several days. This is great news in light of the severity of his original brain trauma. The doctors were very happy with his latest CT scan but will not know actual responsiveness and condition until his body is completely clear of all sedatives. This process will take more time.
As many of you may know, the secondary complications from a serious injury can be challenging. The lungs, kidneys and circulatory system are all effected by the treatment process. The doctors are addressing each condition as it presents itself.
Keep up the energy and support!

August 2nd, 2008
As of this morning, all medications keeping Phil in a drug induced coma have been stopped. His doctors are consistently surprised by his progress and feel his intercranial pressure is within the appropriate range to bring him out of the coma. Once the sedatives are completely clear from his system they can assess his actual responsiveness and condition. This process may take several days. As always we will keep this blog updated with his progress.
Thanks to everyone who continues to provide support in such a respectful way. This will be a long process so endurance of energy and support will be needed.

As many of you may know, the doctors still have Phil in a drug induced coma. Friends of Phil-

Phil is still in critical condition, however his "vitals" are stable. We will be updating the blog daily by noon, to let you know if there have been any changes to his condition. If there is no change, we will state "No Change". You can assume this means that Phil is still in critical condition, however his "vitals" are stable. If there has been a change in either direction we will notify the community as soon as it becomes appropriate to do so.

Friends of Phil-
The Hanley family has a long journey in front of them. As a community, we are searching for ways to support this family. They need us to project thoughts of Love, and Healing, and Strength into the universe. And we radiate. We are believers in Phil.
We have set up a PayPal account for donations that will go directly to the family. As Cid's co-worker and friend, Jennee Sonnenberg will be accepting donations on their behalf. Jenee and Liz will be coordinating with community members to provide the family with Vons gift cards, Dream Dinners, gas cards, coffee cards, money for food while at the hospital, etc. PayPal is one of the most widely used online payment services on the Internet. It is free to set up an account and is absolutely secure. PayPal accepts payments through bank accounts or any major credit card.

Simply click on the link above to donate:

In the meantime, keep radiating. And keep believing. And keep praying. And keep honoring a man who makes every one of us smile. We will continue to be humbled in his light.

Dear Aveson Family,

Thank you all so much for your support! We feel it, Cid feels it, and Phil definitely feels it. Aveson is truly an awesome, unique and inspiring community.

What can you do now??? We are only asking that you continue to send your positive energy. Meals and child care have been taken care for the week from amazing community.

Friends of Phil:

Phil is fighting!!
After a long night of observation Phil is showing "abnormal" movement. This morning his eyes responded to light, he moved his right and left toes as his loved ones touched his feet, and he had a much stronger cough reflex than he did yesterday. The doctor felt it was appropriate to take another CT Scan. After the CT scan, the doctor recommended that treatment be continued. They have now completed another procedure to continue draining fluid from his head.

What this means is, now more than ever we need the entire Aveson Family to send energies of hope and healing to the Hanleys. We are pulling together as a family and we are fighting! Please continue to send your love and positive energies to Phil, Cid, Leah, Jordan, and Phil's family friends and loved ones.

Thank you for your continued support!

Friends of Phil:

Our community has suffered a tragic accident. Phil Hanley has fallen from a ladder at Aveson and suffered brain trauma. He is currently undergoing brain surgery at Huntington hospital. He has also suffered some damage to his lungs.

Now more than ever, we need the entire community's, blessings, prayers, support and/or whatever it is that you do to build the circle of energy around someone who really needs it.

We will keep you updated on Phil's status, and let you know when visitation becomes appropriate.
